About The Film

On March 11, 2011, Japan’s Tohoku coastal region was destroyed by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami that followed. PRAY FOR JAPAN takes place in the devastated region of Ishinomaki, Miyagi – the largest coastal city in Tohoku with a population of over 160,000 people. Filmmaker Stu Levy – an American living in Japan – filmed the tsunami aftermath during his trips to Tohoku as a volunteer and over a period of 6 weeks, captured over 50 hours of footage.

PRAY FOR JAPAN focuses on four key perspectives of the tragedy – School, Shelter, Family, and Volunteers. With each perspective we meet victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them. Through these four vantage points, the audience is able to understand the vast ramifications of this large-scale natural disaster – and the battle these real-life heroes fought on behalf of their loved ones and their hometown.

The 88-minute documentary feature will premiere in Shinjuku, Tokyo on March 6th 2012, to honour the first anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster. As the documentary makes its way across Japan and the U.S., it will debut in Singapore in April 2012 at Shaw Theatres Bugis at Bugis Junction.

Director’s Bio

Stu Levy is an international entrepreneur, producer, director and writer across media including graphic novels, film, television and new media.  Founder of the pioneering media company TOKYOPOP, Levy is known for being one of the people who introduced the English-speaking world to manga, the uniquely Japanese form of comics. Levy has directed two feature films, PRAY FOR JAPAN, and also his award-winning debut VAN VON HUNTER, a satirical take on sword-and-sorcery fantasy and horror.

With TOKYOPOP, he also produced and directed the 8-webisode reality series America’s Greatest Otaku. His first major studio feature film as Executive Producer was PRIEST, released theatrically worldwide in 2011 through Sony Pictures.  As a producer, Levy has a number of live-action and animated feature films and television shows in various stages of development, including adaptations of his graphic novels Princess Ai and Juror 13.  Fluent in Japanese, Levy also serves as chair of the Producers Guild of America’s International Committee and was previously a Board Member of its New Media Council.

2011年3月11日、日本の東北沿岸地域は9.0マグニチュードの地震とその後に続く途方もない津波により破壊されました。「PRAY FOR JAPAN 」（日本への祈り）は、壊滅した地域の宮城県石巻市で撮られました。160,000人以上の人口である東北地方最大の沿岸都市です。映画製作者ステュー・レヴィー氏（ 日本在住のアメリカ人）は、ボランティアとして６週間以上、東北を旅行し津波の惨状の映像を50時間以上撮影しました。

「PRAY FOR JAPAN 」（日本への祈り）は、４つの悲劇的状況に焦点が当てられています。それは学校、避難所、家族、ボランティアです。それぞれの視点で、私達は重大な障害に直面しそれを克服するために戦っている犠牲者に会いました。これらの４つの立場を通して、観客は大規模な自然災害の途方もない影響を理解することができます。また、現実の英雄たちは自分の愛する人と故郷のために戦いました。

この88分のドキュメンタリー映画は、東北地震と津波災害の一周年記念に対し敬意を払い2012年3月6日に東京の新宿で公開されます。ドキュメンタリーフィルムは日本および米国の各地で上映され、シンガポールでまShaw Theatres Bugisにて2012年4月にも封切られる予定です。

映画上映に先立ちまして、シンガポール日本人会事務局長の杉野一夫氏よりご挨拶いただきし、災害で失われた命のために黙祷を捧げます。

すべての中で最も重要なことは、活動による収益は100%非営利団体のJENに寄付されるということです。
この団体は東北の被災地で、瓦礫を除去し、炊き出しを実施し、避難所への物資の配布をし支援しています。

ディレクターの履歴

ステュー・レヴィー氏は、国際的な起業家であり、グラフィック小説、映画やテレビ、そして新しいメディアを含むメディア全体のプロデューサー、ディレクター、ライターです。先駆的なメディア会社であるTOKYOPOPの創設者でもあるレヴィ氏は、マンガ＝日本独自の形をした漫画を英語圏へ紹介した一人として知られています。レヴィー氏は、2つの長編映画を監督し、一つは「PRAY FOR JAPAN 」（日本への祈り）また数々の賞を受賞したデビュー作「VAN VON HUNTERは、剣と魔法、ファンタジー、ホラーの風刺的な作品で知られています。
